What does it mean to have Jewish genes but no Jewish heritage?

Am I Jewish or not? I can easily say “I’m part French,” but I don’t feel the same way about my Jewish heritage — even though it makes up a significant part of my family’s history. It doesn’t feel like it’s mine to claim.
